2007 HUV4421DXPWith the introduction of the 4421 series of UTV's that hit dealerships in September, Husqvarna has made it clear that it wants to be more competitive in the UTV market. The four new models share the same chassis and suspension and are available with gas or diesel engines, along with the high-end XP version. Our test unit came with the 20-hp Kubota diesel and the XP package. The XP package features an array of neat components for the off-road adventurer: a hefty push bar, 25-inch aggressive tread tires, a sealed CVT for water crossings, nerf bars for better body protection, a powered dump and skid plates to protect critical underpinnings. The wheelbase is a full 30 inches longer than a traditional ATV, nine inches longer than a Ranger and 7.5-inches longer than the RTV900. Still, both its 57-inch width and 76-inch height are on par with other UTVs, so if you're moving up to the Trans from an existing UTV, it's simply getting used to the added length. The first item that catches your eye is the High-Definition Hardwoods Camo. The special effect shadowing gives the look of a leaf-layered forest floor, and is very eye-pleasing. The camo edition will add about $500 to the overall price, but if you're intent on blending in with a forest background, this is the way to go. Competition is particularly stiff in this segment, and one doesn't know from year to year who might take over as reigning champ. How does it compare with the competition? --- There's been a big suspension upgrade. On the front, Deere has done away with the coil-over shocks found on the other Gators, replacing them with a new McPherson strut system. There's 5.2 inches of travel, but the strut system dramatically improved several areas. Not only is the ride much smoother, but the wheels can turn farther for tighter maneuvering and there's better front-end traction because there's less wheel-hop under acceleration. The independent rear suspension has a coil-over shock system with seven inches of travel, giving the XUV 11 inches of ground clearance and the best weight-carrying IRS stability in the industry. More... 2007 Yamaha RhinoThey're small by UTV standards and don't feel very large when you're sitting in them, but the bucket seats are comfortable (read: soft), provide an upright wraparound driving position (which we like) and offer unusually good legroom. Like a sports car, you kind of wear the Rhino. That's not to say you aren't comfortable, though. You immediately feel at ease behind the wheel. The ride is firm but not harsh, and the rack-and-pinion steering is precisely weighted so you have a good feel of the trail. Twisty sections are swallowed with ease, a tribute to the independent front suspension's damping which, when combined with the rigid steel frame, provides stability and smooth, precise control. You'll need to get used to driving with the upper frame on tighter ATV trails. While it most often pushes low branches and limbs aside, the front uprights can at times direct a limb into the seating area. More... 2007 Ranger RZRAt 50 inches wide, the Ranger RZR is the only trail-capable side-by-side in its class. Its 945-pound weight makes it the lightest side-by-side with the lowest cage height. It is also equipped with a true all-wheel drive (AWD) system that automatically engages when the rider needs more forward traction and reverts back to 2WD automatically when AWD is no longer needed. Polaris' patented design places the engine behind the seat, giving the Ranger RZR the lowest center of gravity of all the sport side-by-sides. Riders will find themselves sitting at least seven inches lower than they would in competitive side-by-side vehicles. The Ranger RZR has nine inches of travel in the front, 9.5 inches in the rear and ten inches of ground clearance due to its double A-arm front suspension with an exclusive, front anti-sway bar and a rolled independent rear suspension (IRS). The vehicle also sports what Polaris says is the best ergonomics in its class, including tilt steering and adjustable hand rails and seats. Users can operate and change attachments from their seat with an industry-exclusive joystick control. During attachment changes, the operator only needs to leave the seat to lock or unlock the attachment. When not in use, the RapidLink attachment arm can be easily removed for traditional four-wheel drive applications. More... |
